‘Cookies’ are simple code tags embedded into most websites to provide a seamless user experience and offer analytics to web hosts.

You will be familiar with the ‘accept all cookies’ or ‘deny settings’ pop-ups most websites now feature.

These pop-ups refer to cookie consent and ask you to agree to data storage for either:

  • a short amount of time (the time you’re on the website) or;
  • a longer amount of time (repeat visits – this is called a persistent cookie).

Cookies make web browsing more joined up for you, the user. They can help websites serve you more relevant content, or make finding something you searched for before a bit easier.

If you don’t want websites to store your data via cookies, you can block cookies or even delete them from some websites. Be aware that doing so may mean you lose some functionality on these sites. See the ‘help’ tab of your browser to block or delete cookies.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a simple text ‘tag’ file stored on your mobile device or computer by a website’s server. Only that server can read and retrieve the contents of the cookie – they are secure. Also, cookies are unique to web browsers.  This is why you may find ads unrelated to your search history on mobile appearing on desktop.

Cookies contain anonymous information: a unique identifier, site name, and some numbers and digits.

By holding this data between visits, a website can make it easier for you to navigate around. Without cookies, websites would think you were a new person every time you clicked on a new page on the site!

At Majuba, we reserve the right to set ‘first party cookies’ as well as ‘third party cookies’. You also have the right to deny access. We’ll always add a consent pop-up on pages where cookies are active so you can opt in or out.

First party cookies are set by the website you are visiting and they can only be read by that site. Third party cookies are set by a different organisation to the owner of the website you are visiting.

We, like most other website owners, use Google Analytics to see how many views our web pages got this month, and where on the internet users were referred from, etc. The data is anonymised – we’ll never know it’s you! – but it’s hugely useful for us.

You may wish to visit, which contains lots of information about cookies and how to disable them if you’re concerned.
